CrossAsia Talks: Mårten Söderblom Saarela 4. August 2022

(See English below)

The late eighteenth century witnessed the flourishing of a brand of precise philological scholarship known as “evidential learning” (kaozheng xue or kaoju xue). In the hands of Chinese scholars from the lower Yangzi region, subjects ranging from classical learning to geography and mathematics were subjected to a first and foremost textual and historical form of research. The role of the Qing court, headed by the Manchu Qianlong emperor, in the emergence of this kind of scholarship has long been a matter of debate. Some have seen Qing imperial power as an inhibiting factor that pushed research into politically harmless discussions of textual minutiae, whereas others have recognized the importance of the court as a patron of “evidential learning.” Whatever the case, the Manchu political leadership remains on the sidelines of an ultimately Chinese project.

In this talk, I will approach the issue of court involvement in “evidential learning” from a new angle. I will look at a series of research projects that were carried out at the Qianlong court during this period, in which both the source material, the workflow, and the resulting books were wholly or partially in Manchu, not Chinese. As the Chinese textual heritage was being re-examined by lower Yangzi-luminaries, clerks and officials under the leadership of the emperor and his Manchu Grand Councilors produced three scholarly works on the oldest Manchu-language documents that existed. The archival documents from the early seventeenth century that the victorious Qing had brought with them to Beijing—fragmentary and hard to read in parts—were studied from a linguistic and historical point of view. Guided by the question of how these scholarly projects compare to Chinese “evidential learning,” I will discuss a few works from the library’s collection.

CrossAsia Talks: Eric Schluessel 16.6.2022

(See English below)

Newly discovered manuscripts from the State Library of Berlin reveal new facets of village life in the Uyghur homeland of Xinjiang, China (East Turkestan) in the 1890s. These documents show how ordinary merchants, artisans, and farmers navigated an economy that was increasingly oriented to the market and towards China proper. From merchants‘ notebooks, legal documents, and grain relief records, we see networks of market actors, even families, emerge.

Unsere Vortragsreihe „CrossAsia Talks“

(See English version below)

“CrossAsia Talks“ Lecture Series

Preparations for the celebrations on the occasion of our Triple Jubilee Year 2022 are in full swing. In June, they will commence with a series of lectures entitled “CrossAsia Talks” which is expected to continue until late 2023. Researchers and colleagues from Asian Studies will present talks on a wide range of subjects and objects from our collections. They will shed a light on the contexts of their origin and development, as well as consider the ways of conducting research with, and on, our Asia Collections. Furthermore, they will also discuss visionary ideas and present techniques about how to digitally utilise our collections in the future.

The lectures will start on 2 June 2022, with a talk by Prof. Dr. Sven Osterkamp of Ruhr-Universität Bochum, titled „Sinica in the Electorial library during the times of Andreas Müller and Christian Mentzel – and their subsequent fate“ (in German).

This opening lecture will firstly present both well-known, as well as new, sources on the composition of the Berlin Sinica collection of Andreas Müller and Christian Mentzel at the end of the 17th century, and then continue by shedding an exemplary light on their oftentimes still unclear fate. Attention will then focus on a few cases in which Julius Klaproth in the early 19th century played an essential role.

Please contact us in advance at: ostasienabt@sbb.spk-berlin.de and let us know if you need barrier-free access. The event will be filmed.*

The lecture will also be streamed and recorded via Webex. You can take part in the lecture using your browser without having to install a special software. Vortragsankündigung: Qiuzi Guo: The Shadow of Trees: Photography and Visual Realism in Early Twentieth-Century China

Weitere Informationen finden Sie hier.

Analog – Digital – Hybrid: Exploring Methodological Varieties in East Asian Intellectual Historiography through the Case of the Japanese Mito School

Digital history constitutes a rapidly developing “field,” but it is still primarily dominated by Western themes and texts. In this talk, I will introduce a possible application of digital tools in the context of the “intellectual history of historiography” in East Asia. Focusing on the procedural study of the Japanese Mito School, a controversial scholarly group that compiled the Dai Nihon shi (The History of Great Japan, 1657-1906), the largest history writing product in Japan, my project explores the shifting dynamics of intellectual history and historiography in the 17th-20th centuries, as well as the significance of foreign elements in the formation of nationalism in Japan. Due to the monumentality of the overarching theme, specifically the length of the Dai Nihon shi, the 250 year-long compilation process, and the high number of contributors (more than 150 individuals), I have developed a hybrid and integrated methodology to process the large amount of data by intertwining the close reading of the Dai Nihon shi and the individual records of the compilers with the embedded visualizations of the authors’ biographical details. My presentation will explain how dealing with non-Latin scripts affected the research process and how digital methods helped deal with monumentality to create a novel, “procedural” analysis. Finally, the talk will also explore potential means to meaningfully combine the “analog” study of the Dai Nihon shi (which I conducted in Chicago, in Japan, and at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) with its ongoing digital analysis.

Short biography:
Alíz Horváth recently completed her PhD in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. She also holds a dual MA degree in Japanese and Chinese philology and an additional BA in Korean and Finnish language and has spent multiple years in these four areas as a scholarship holder. She is interested in the mechanisms of transnational flows in Japan, China, and Korea, as well as the dynamics of intellectual history, cultural history, and history writing. She enjoys experimenting with interdisciplinary solutions and novel methods, such as digital tools, to explore innovative approaches to the study of East Asia. She is particularly enthusiastic about data visualizations and text analysis and actively advocates for diversity and inclusion in digital humanities through the promotion of non-Western perspectives. She currently teaches East Asian (Japanese, Chinese, and Korean) history and digital humanities at Eötvös Loránd University as assistant professor and is also a member of various international DH-related initiatives, such as the NEH-funded “New Languages for NLP” project, organized by Princeton University and Haverford College in collaboration with Library of Congress Labs and DARIAH.

Spaces of the diaspora – a presentation of Katya Knyazeva on 9 August (5 pm)

We cordially invite you to participate in the following presentation on 9 August 2021, 5 pm, organised by the Wissenswerkstatt and the Eastern Europe Department of Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin:

Spaces of the diaspora: the Russian émigrés in European and Asian cities in the first half of the 20th century

Katya Knyazeva – Research fellow | Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale, Italy

The spatial approach to the history of the Russian diaspora is an invitation to step away from the issues of displacement, adaptation and cultural identity, and to explore the intersection of urban history and literary studies. Looking at the built environment and city-writing through the lens of the émigré experience helps generate new knowledge about both the diaspora and the places it inhabited. Using the example of Shanghai, where tens of thousands of ex-Russia sojourners made their home in the 1920s–1940s, we will reconstruct the architectural legacy of the Russian community and its lasting imprint on the city. In a parallel line of enquiry, the written testimony of the literary Russians in the post-First World War Berlin opens a new window onto the early stages of the city’s transformation into the global capital of the Roaring Twenties. Lastly, a comparative assessment of reflexive émigré prose and journalism in various locales – Constantinople, Berlin, Paris, Shanghai – questions the roles of the individual, the society and the physical space in the diaspora’s ability to create a lasting self-portrait. The presentation will also touch on the accompanying digital projects, such as the virtual Necropolis of the Russian Shanghai and Metromod: Spaces of Exile, which link the history of “Russia Abroad” to the global history of migrations and digital humanities.

Katya Knyazeva, from Novosibirsk, Russia, is a historian and a journalist with a focus on urban form, heritage preservation and the Russian diaspora. She is the author of the two-volume historical atlas Shanghai Old Town. Topography of a Phantom City (Suzhou Creek Press, 2015 and 2018). Her articles on history and architecture appear in international media and her blog http://avezink.livejournal.com. Her scholarly writing can be found in Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society China, Global History and Built Heritage. Knyazeva received her second Master’s degree at the Bologna University and is presently a Research Fellow at the University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy. Her doctoral dissertation focuses on the literary and spatial dimensions of the Russian émigré experience in the cities of Europe and Asia in the first half of the twentieth century.
