Wir freuen uns sehr, Ihnen den Vortrag von Herrn Dr. Andrea Acri zum Thema Dharma Pātañjala ankündigen zu dürfen. Herr Dr. Acri wird am Donnerstag, dem 12. Oktober, einen Vortrag mit dem Titel „The Old Javanese-Sanskrit Dharma Pātañjala: Pātañjala Yoga in a Javanese Śaiva Garb“ im Simon-Bolivar-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin) halten. Der Vortrag wird sich mit dem altjavanischen Text Dharma Pātañjala beschäftigen, und wie dieser einen neuen Blickwinkel auf das Pātañjalayogaśāstra ermöglicht.

The 15th-century codex unicus containing the Old Javanese text Dharma Pātañjala (MS Schoemann I 21, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, 89 leaves) is an important and in many respects unique object. Besides documenting a rare tradition of palmleaf manuscripts from West Java, it is also among the oldest manuscripts recovered in the Indonesian archipelago. Further, the Dharma Pātañjala provides the most complete, coherent, and detailed exposition of Śaiva philosophy and theology to be found in an Old Javanese text; even more interestingly, it adopts Pātañjala yoga, attuning to a Śaiva soteriological and theological framework. Nearly a third of it follows the order of the main topics treated in the first three chapters of the Sanskrit Yogasūtras-cum-Bhāṣya (i.e., the Pātañjalayogaśāstra), interweaving a few Sanskrit stanzas with an Old Javanese commentary that is related to that embedding the Yogasūtra. Thus, the Dharma Pātañjala not only allows us to read the Pātañjalayogaśāstra from a fresh perspective, providing us with new insights into the textual transmission and cultural reception of Patañjali’s work beyond the boundaries of South Asia, but also helps us to reconstruct many important aspects of pre-Islamic religion and philosophy in Java.

We are very pleased to announce the lecture by Dr. Andrea Acri on Dharma Pātañjala. Mr Acri will give a lecture titled „The Old Javanese-Sanskrit Dharma Pātañjala: Pātañjala Yoga in a Javanese Śaiva Garb“ on Thursday 12 October in the Simon Bolivar Hall (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin). The lecture will focus on the ancient Javanese text Dharma Pātañjala and how it provides a new perspective on the Pātañjalayogaśāstra.

Wir freuen uns sehr Ihnen den Vortrag von unserer aktuellen Stipendiatin Frau Dr. Julia Schneider (University College Cork) mit dem Titel „Incredibly woke or cancel culture at its best? The Qianlong emperor’s censorship of Ming books (1770s–1780s)“ am Mittwoch, den 28. Juni ab 18 Uhr im Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin) ankündigen zu dürfen. Der Fokus des Vortrags liegt auf der Agenda des Qianlong Kaisers in der sogenannten „Literarischen Inquisition“ (1772–1788) und welche Diskurse nicht-chinesischer Personengruppen in vor allem mingzeitlichen Texten für zensurwürdig erachtet wurden.

Did the Qianlong Emperor of the Manchu Qing Dynasty (1636/1644-1912) issue an anti-racist campaign when he forbade Chinese books that discredited non-Chinese others? In my lecture, I aim to answer this question by introducing passages and terms that made Qing officials collect books for censorship. I focus on the so-called literary inquisition (c. 1772–1788) of the Qianlong emperor which particularly censored books from Ming times (1368–1644). Among other criteria, censors were liable to collect and destroy books that contained partial or derogatory descriptions of the Jurchen (the Manchus’ ancestors), Liaodong (the region of Manchu origin), and non-Chinese peoples in the northwest (the Manchus’ allies).

As a Manchu emperor, the Qianlong emperor belonged to a people that was a numerical minority if compared to the Chinese, the largest constituency among the Qing subject peoples. From an analysis of books that were censored for the above-mentioned reasons we can learn if the Qianlong Emperor indeed attempted to end a hegemonic Chinese discourse on ‘barbarians’ that he perceived as harmful to his dynasty. How did Ming historians understand and narrate non-Chinese history, which of their narratives did Qing censors find worth censoring, and why? A textual analysis of relevant passages in censored books will provide new insights into the Qianlong emperor’s agenda of censorship and his censors’ reading of Chinese discourses on non-Chinese peoples.

We are very pleased to announce the lecture by our grant holder Dr. Julia Schneider (University College Cork) entitled „Incredibly woke or cancel culture at its best? The Qianlong emperor’s censorship of Ming books (1770s-1780s)“ on Wednesday June 28th at 6 pm in the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin). The focus of the lecture is on the Qianlong Emperor’s agenda in the so-called „Literary Inquisition“ (1772-1788) and which discourses of non-Chinese groups of people were deemed worthy of censorship in mainly Ming-period texts.

Hachiman engi 八幡縁起 oder Die karmischen Ursprünge von Hachiman erzählt von der mythischen Eroberung Koreas durch Kaiserin Jingū 神功皇后, der Geburt ihres Sohnes, Kaiser Ōjin 応神天皇, und seinen wundersamen Erscheinungen als Gottheit Hachiman, wörtlich „acht Banner“. Da die Verehrung von Hachiman seit dem späten dreizehnten Jahrhundert weit verbreitet war, wurden illuminierte Handrollen mit seiner Gründungslegende vervielfältigt und den neu gegründeten Hachiman-gū-Schreinen im ganzen Land gewidmet. Der Satz von zwei Schriftrollen in der Sammlung der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin mit dem Titel Konda Hachiman engi 誉田八幡縁起 oder Die karmischen Ursprünge des Konda Hachiman ist eine Kopie einer Version der Hachiman-Schriftrollen von 1433 aus dem 18. bis 19. Letztere war eine der drei Hachiman-Handrollen, die der sechste Ashikaga-Shogun Yoshinori 足利義教 (1429-1441) im selben Jahr als Teil seines grandiosen Projekts der Hachiman-Verehrung neu in Auftrag gab. Die Praktiken der Herstellung von Kopien und Reproduktionen waren ein herausragendes Merkmal bei der Entwicklung der Hachiman-Handrollen, wobei die neu geschaffenen Versionen mit devotionalen, soziopolitischen und ästhetischen Werten versehen wurden. In diesem Vortrag werden die Berliner Hachiman-Handrollen und ihr Original von 1433 im größeren Kontext der Reproduktion von Hachiman engi untersucht.

Das Berliner Set war eine von sieben weiteren Versionen von Hachiman-Rollen, die 2015 im Rahmen des Hachiman Digital Handscrolls Project an der Universität Heidelberg untersucht wurden. Sie ist nun auch auf der neu gestalteten Oberfläche des Projekts Japanische Handrollen der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin verfügbar.

We are very pleased to announce the lecture of Mr. Fengyu Wang (University of Heidelberg) on 15.6.2023 from 6 pm in the Simon Bolivar-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin) on the topic „The Karmic Origins Painted Anew: The Reproductions of the Hachiman Handscrolls„.

Hachiman engi 八幡縁起 or The Karmic Origins of Hachiman, narrates Empress Jingū’s 神功皇后 mythical conquest of Korea, the birth of her son, Emperor Ōjin 応神天皇, and his miraculous manifestations as the deity Hachiman, literally “eight banners.” As the Hachiman veneration became widespread since the late thirteenth century, illuminated handscrolls of his inception legend were reproduced and dedicated to the newly founded Hachiman-gū Shrines across the country. The set of two scrolls in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin collection, titled Konda Hachiman engi 誉田八幡縁起 or The Karmic Origins of the Konda Hachiman, is an eighteenth-to-nineteenth-century copy of a 1433 version of Hachiman scrolls. The latter was itself one of the three sets of Hachiman handscrolls that the sixth Ashikaga shogun Yoshinori 足利義教 (1429–1441) newly commissioned in the same year, as part of his grandiose project of Hachiman veneration. The practices of making copies and reproductions were a prominent feature in the developments of the Hachiman handscrolls, where devotional, socio-political, and aesthetic values were imbued into the newly created versions. This talk will examine the Berlin set of Hachiman handscrolls and its 1433 original in the larger context of reproducing Hachiman engi.

The Berlin set was one of seven other versions of Hachiman scrolls investigated by the 2015 Hachiman Digital Handscrolls Project at Heidelberg University. It is now also available on the newly designed interface of the Japanese Handscrolls project of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

Unschuld (Charité Berlin): „Historical Resonances Illuminated – The Chinese Handwritten Health Care Volumes of the 16th through the 20th Century (Sammlung Unschuld, Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) as Resources of Knowledge“ am 25.5.2023 ab 18 Uhr im Dietrich Bonhoeffer-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin) ankündigen zu dürfen. Der Vortrag wird ein Schlaglicht auf chinesische Medizintexte werfen.

With the acquisition of the „Sammlung Unschuld“ the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin has significantly expanded its holdings of East Asian manuscripts. The Sammlung Unschuld includes more than 1000 volumes, dating from the 16th century to the mid-20th century, of personal records on health care, handwritten by professional physicians and itinerant healers, by the owners of apothecary shops and private households, by exorcists and Buddhists, students and other concerned individuals. These are documents opening a window  on the reality of professional and lay health care in pre-modern China. They serve to correct an ahistorical image associated with the spread of so-called „Traditional Chinese Medicine“ in the West. In addition, they offer countless clues on social life and natural knowledge not found in printed texts and other sources of the time. The Institute for Chinese Life Sciences (ICL)  of Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin has explored these texts from a medical-historical perspective. At the same time, in collaboration with the molecular-biological research group Bicoll in Martinsried and Shanghai and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, it has examined more than 40 000 therapeutic recipes recommended in these volumes for hints at substances that may have a value in a science-based health care system. This talk will address and portray both the historical and the application oriented agenda pursued by ICL.

From the 21st century onward, one of the remarkable changes in Central Eurasian historical studies has been the investigation of indigenous documents alongside traditional historiographies. These sources, which include Islamic legal documents relating to real estate sales, debts, commercial transactions, legal disputes, religious donations (waqf), as well as personal memoranda, letters, accounts, and miscellaneous pieces of paper, have the potential to enrich historical research beyond conventional political and incident histories into a more nuanced understanding of social and economic histories.  This talk will first introduce the historical background, acquisition process, and initial arrangement of the Kashgar Documents Collection, which was discovered in the old city of Kashgar in 2002 and transferred to Xinjiang University of China in 2014.

We are very pleased to announce the lecture by Prof. Jun Sugawara (Lanzhou University) entitled „The History Concealed in the Narrow Alley (tar kocha): Organizing and Researching the Kashgar Document Collection“ on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 6 pm in the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Saal (Potsdamer Straße 33, 10785 Berlin). The lecture will focus on the Kashgar Document Collection and its significance for social and economic historical research on Xinjiang.

Sarye p’yŏllam (四禮便覽) is a four-volume Korean ritual manual compiled by scholar-official Yi Chae 李縡 (1680–1746) in 1746. The manual is one of the most elaborate attempts to create a practical handbook of the family rituals that defined both life and death in the Confucian society of the late Chosŏn dynasty. It offers both theoretical background and practical advice on the ceremonies that accompanied the four most important events in individual and family life: coming-of-age, marriage, funeral rites and ancestor worship. Given the utmost importance of these events, the manual not only provides detailed information on every step of the respective ceremonies, but also on the proper forms of ritual clothes, ritual utensils, sacrificial food, and the hierarchical arrangement of participants. The manuscript of the manual was prepared by Yi Chae until his death in 1746, after which it was collated, corrected, and already put to use by his disciple Pak Sŏngwŏn 朴聖源 (1697–1767). Later, Yi Chae’s grandson Yi Ch’ae 李采 (1745–1820) continued to prepare the manuscript and the first woodblock prints were produced in 1844. The Sarye p’yŏllam became the most widely used compact handbook for the four rituals in the diverse and ever-changing ritual landscape of the late Chosŏn society.

Wir freuen uns Ihnen den Vortrag von Dr. Oliver Corff mit dem Thema „Transformative Processes in Manju Lexicology and Lexicography“ am Donnerstag, den 2. März 2023 ab 18 Uhr im Theodor-Fontane Saal (Unter den Linden 8, 10117 Berlin) ankündigen zu dürfen.

The Han-i araha Manju gisun-i buleku bithe (Dictionary of Manju Words) of 1708, offering approx. 12,100 entries, is a major milestone in Manju lexicology and lexicography as it offers precise definitions of the meaning of Manju words, and beyond that, the concept and structure of knowledge and thought in the Manju world of the Qing empire.

Its successor is the Han-i araha nonggime toktobuha Manju gisun-i buleku bithe (Enlarged and Revised Dictionary of Manju Words) of 1772, which offers approx. 18,655 entries, an apparent increase by more than 50% which, at first glance, confirms the word nonggime (“enlarged”) in the title of this dictionary.

A closer inspection of the dictionary of 1708 reveals that many entries have more than one definition. Next to A be, B sembi (“A is called B”), we find definitions like A be, B sembi. geli C be, inu B sembi (“A is called B. In addition, C is also called B”), while alternatives with the same meaning are given as geli D seme gisurembi (“also said as D”). In fact, the secondary definitions and alternatives comprise many of those lemmata which are found as entries in their own right in the Enlarged and Revised Dictionary of 1772.

The process of editing the Enlarged and Revised Dictionary thus did not exhaust itself in adding new words, but was very much an effort to deconvolute and restructure the semantic foundation of the lexicon without departing too far from the original concept of the dictionary of 1708, as captured in the word toktobuha (“revised”).

With the help of quantitative measures to describe the “edit distance” between the two dictionaries it becomes possible to study the process of how convoluted homonyms and polysemes in the dictionary of 1708 unfold into the rigid fabric of the dictionary of 1772.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen den Vortrag von Beate Wonde (ehemals Kuratorin der Mori-Ōgai-Gedenkstätte) mit dem Thema „Der größte Teil geht verloren? Das Wirken des Japanologen und Übersetzers Prof. Dr. sc. Jürgen Berndt“ am Donnerstag, den 9. Februar 2023 ab 18 Uhr im Theodor-Fontane-Saal (Unter den Linden 8, 10117 Berlin), ankündigen zu dürfen.

2023 wäre Jürgen Berndt 90 Jahre alt geworden. 30 Jahre nach seinem viel zu frühen Tod werden seine zahlreichen literarischen Übertragungen weiterhin rezipiert, sind Anregung und Maßstab für heutige Übersetzer:innen und werden von der wissenschaftlichen Fachwelt gleichermaßen geschätzt. Sein Wirken als Japanologe, Autor, Referent, als Impulsgeber und Motor in den Beziehungen zwischen der DDR und Japan ist 50 Jahre nach Aufnahme der diplomatischen Beziehungen zwischen der DDR und Japan nahezu vergessen. Nach einer Odyssee von Berlin nach Erfurt und 20 Jahre später wieder zurück nach Berlin gehört der Nachlass von Berndt zu den Beständen, die eher zufällig in die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin kamen. Die Materialien könnten eine Fundgrube sein für alle, die sich mit den Kultur- und Wissenschaftsbeziehungen zwischen der DDR und Japan befassen. Eine Aufarbeitung steht also dringend auf der Tagesordnung, solange es noch Zeitzeugen gibt, die Dokumente interpretieren und in einen zeitgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang stellen können.

We are pleased to present the lecture by Beate Wonde (Former curator of the Mori-Ōgai-Gedenkstätte) with the topic „The majority is lost? The work of the Japanologist and translator Prof. Dr. sc. Jürgen Berndt“ on Thursday, 9th of February 2023 from 6 pm in the Theodor-Fontane-Saal (Unter den Linden 8, 10117 Berlin).

Jürgen Berndt would have turned 90 in 2023. Thirty years after his untimely death, his numerous literary translations continue to be received, are a source of inspiration, a benchmark for today’s translators, and are equally appreciated by scholars. His work as a Japanologist, author, lecturer, initiator and driving force in GDR – Japan relations has been all but forgotten 50 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the GDR and Japan. After an odyssey from Berlin to Erfurt and 20 years later back to Berlin, Berndt’s estate is one of the holdings that came to the Berlin State Library rather by chance. The materials could be a treasure trove for anyone concerned with cultural and academic relations between the GDR and Japan. A reappraisal is therefore urgently on the agenda as long as there are still witnesses who can interpret documents and place them in a contemporary historical context.

We are delighted to talk to you at our CrossAsia User Meeting on January 19. Here is our final program:

The exchange meeting is intended for all those who use the services of the CrossAsia portal and the FID Asia and are involved in research in the regions of East Asia, Southeast Asia and Central Asia.

In order to support you in your research in the best possible way, we would like to enter again into a dialogue with you. We are interested in your experiences, ideas and wishes in order to identify deficits, potential for expansion or even new fields of action for CrossAsia.

Program

18:00: Welcome

18:05: Impulse lecture about CrossAsia and the FID Asia

18:15: Breakout-Sessions as brainstorming in four separate rooms hosted by our team about the topics:

  • Tools and DH methods: Do you have ideas for further free services based on CrossAsia full texts and images? How can the processing of CrossAsia resources be improved with external tools and which methods/data do you already use?
  • Feedback about our services, ideas for new services: Which of our services do you use regularly and are the services offered sufficient for you? Do you have any ideas/suggestions for additional services that CrossAsia should offer?
  • Usability of the portal „CrossAsia“ and its functions: Is the „CrossAsia“ portal user-friendly enough? Where do you see room for improvement in the use of the site?
  • Open Access Repository and E-Publishing: To what extent and in what form should CrossAsia be involved in e-publishing? What expectations do you have of the CrossAsia Open Access Repository?

19:20: Information about planed CrossAsia user participation in the advisory board meetings
