Ausfall – CrossAsia Talks: David Helliwell 13.9.2023
(See English below)
Achtung!
The Red Decree, dated October 1716 and also known as the Red Manifesto, is actually an open letter from the Kangxi emperor addressed to all westerners entering China in the expectation that they would take copies of it back to Europe. Visually striking, being printed in red and with an elaborate border of imperial dragons, it is tangible evidence of the so-called “Rites Controversy” which eventually led to the prohibition of Christianity in China and the expulsion of the missionaries. This copy of the Red Decree is one of eighteen known extant specimens.
