Am 24. September 2026 ab 18 Uhr (Berliner Zeit) nimmt uns Prof. Trent Walker (University of Michigan) in seinem Onlinevortrag „Buddhist Narratives in Early Modern Southeast Asia: Insights from the Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts“ mit in die faszinierende Welt der buddhistischen Erzähltraditionen im frühneuzeitlichen Südostasien.

Die Entstehung neuer Schriften trug maßgeblich dazu bei, dass sich der Buddhismus im späten ersten und frühen zweiten Jahrtausend in ganz Asien verbreiten konnte. Die Fälle der chinesischen und tibetischen Apokryphen sind relativ gut bekannt; wie und warum in Südostasien neue Sutta-Texte verfasst wurden, bleibt jedoch unklar. Wichtige Quellen zur Klärung dieser Fragen sind in der Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts und der Digital Library of Northern Thai Manuscripts erhalten, die online über das CrossAsia-Portal der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin zugänglich sind. Dieser Vortrag zeichnet die Entwicklung erfundener buddhistischer Erzählungen auf dem südostasiatischen Festland im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert nach, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf Pali-Lao-Bitext-Predigten liegt, darunter die älteste bisher bekannte Sammlung von Prosageschichten in laotischer Sprache.

On 24 September 2026, from 6 pm (Berlin time), Prof. Trent Walker (University of Michigan) will take us on a journey into the fascinating world of Buddhist narrative traditions in early modern Southeast Asia in his online lecture „Buddhist Narratives in Early Modern Southeast Asia: Insights from the Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts„.

The production of new scriptures was one factor in how Buddhism continued to flourish across Asia in the late first and early second millennia. The cases of Chinese and Tibetan apocrypha are relatively well-known; how and why new sutta texts were composed in Southeast Asia remains obscure. Key sources for addressing these questions are preserved in the Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts and the Digital Library of Northern Thai Manuscripts, available online through the CrossAsia portal of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. This talk traces the development of invented Buddhist narratives in mainland Southeast Asia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with a focus on Pali-Lao bitextual sermons, including the oldest set of Lao-language prose narratives yet known.
